SUBJECT: Optimist International Junior Golf Championships (OIJGC)-2008

 

Dear Junior Golfer:

 

                Each year Optimist International sponsors the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships (OIJGC).  Drawing golfers from nearly 50 states and 30 countries, the OIJGC will be held in two sessions at the PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.  Golfers ages 10-15 will play July 24-28, while those 16-18 will play July 29-Aug 3.  The split session provides facilities for additional golfers and offers an excellent and challenging setting with four golf courses, practice areas and housing on site for the participants.  Information about this tournament may also be obtained by contacting OI on the web at www.optimist.org, then select Junior Golf Championships.

 

                Tournament play is conducted according to the following age categories in both boys and girls divisions: 16-18, 14-15, 12-13 and 10-11.  A golfer’s age as of the last day of their respective tournament determines the age grouping.  All junior golfers within the state of Kansas must qualify at a state-qualifying (District) tournament for selection to play in Florida.

 

                The Kansas District (state) Championship Tournament will be held on Thursday, June 12, 2008.  The District (State) Championship Tournament for 14-18 year old boys will be held at the Salina Elk’s Country Club, 1800 S Marymount Rd, Salina, Kansas.  The Kansas District (state) Championship Tournament for all girls and the 10-13 year old boys will be held at the Salina Municipal Golf Course, 2500 E. Crawford Ave.  All interested golfers should submit their applications ASAP but not later than June 7, 2008.  Early submission of applications is recommended.  For the 14-18 year old golfers an entry fee of $50 and the entry form, properly signed by both the applicant and his or her parent/guardian, are required.  A golfer in the 10-13 age group must submit an entry fee of $30 and the entry form, properly signed by both the applicant and his or her parent/guardian.  Pairings and tee time information will be available by June 10th. Tee times will begin at approximately 8 a.m. at Salina Elks CC and at approximately 11:00 a.m. at Salina Municipal GC.

 

                The Kansas District will sponsor eligible first place boy and girl winners from the 12-18 year old age groups by paying their Florida registration, including housing, and reimbursing airfare up to $250.  Incidental expenses will be the responsibility of the golfers.  Other qualified golfers may go to Florida by paying their own way or getting sponsorships through local sponsors.

 

                There are ample opportunities for the junior golfer during the summer, but we are confident that the OIJGC will be one of the year’s golf highlights.  This tournament offers an excellent opportunity for you to meet and play golf with some of the best junior golfers in the world.  Many high acclaimed golfers have participated in this program on their way to the professional ranks including Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, Craig Stadler, Corey Pavin, Phil Mickelson, Davis Love III, Justin Leonard, Nancy Lopez, Michelle McGann and Amy Alcott to name but a few.  Possibly, we hope to see your name added to this list in the coming years.  Should you or your parents have any questions concerning this event, please do not hesitate to contact us.
